LACMA IN FULL

Peter Zumthor’s preliminary model for LACMA, east campus

The LACMA campus is in full bloom including the unveiling of ambitious plans for a new building. “The Presence of the Past: Peter Zumthor Reconsiders LACMA”, highlights the Swiss architect’s preliminary plan for housing the museum’s permanent collection. The show reviews the history of Hancock Park and presents Zumthor’s model along with accompanying documentation. A video which features charismatic Director, Michael Govan, in infectious conversation about LACMA’s future, sets the stage for the massive campaign ahead.

JAMES TURRELL RETROSPECTIVE

James Turrell at LACMA

LACMA achieves well-earned acclaim for the James Turrell Retrospective. The exhibition heralds one of most heroic thinkers of our time in a display that is visually arresting and intellectually expanding. Entry to the show is controlled by timed ticket to allow a contemplative experience for a limited number of viewers at one time. Visitors are offered the opportunity to experience the entire realm of visual perception and the effect it may have on one’s emotion and physicality. The essence of color, the boundaries of space and the nature of edges are examined throughout the exhibition.

View inside James Turrell’s Roden Crater, Arizona

James Turrell’s magnum opus is the fabled Roden Crater, an extinct volcanic cinder cone located in Arizona near the Grand Canyon. Turrell purchased the property in 1977 and began to initiate his vision. The Crater is both a monumental work of art and a naked eye observatory dedicated to visual phenomena and meant to link visitors with celestial movement of the planets, stars and distant galaxies. The approach is as futuristic and gorgeously aesthetic as one can imagine, yet harkens back to ancient sites like Macchu Picchu in Peru, the Mayan pyramids in Mexico or Borobudur in Central Java, Indonesia.

The LACMA exhibition includes a full exploration of the Crater project along with a stunning video that takes the viewer through Phase One of the completed construction. Don’t miss the video if you want the virtual tour. Public visitation is not currently available and remains a few years away. Construction of Phase 2 is in planning and engineering stages and fundraising is ongoing.

MORE LACMA

LACMA is an encyclopedic museum with numerous collections. Whatever admiration or criticism exists for the quality and depth of particular departments, a walkthrough reveals a sense of making the most of it all. The individiual galleries are installed with elegance and consideration.

Luba Mask, collection of Royal Museum of Central Africa, at LACMA

Shaping Power: Luba Masterworks from the Royal Museum of Central Africa” is a focused exhibition of work from the Democratic Republic of the Congo on view in the Hammer Building. The Royal Museum is a center for scientific research on Africa, located in Belgium. The works on view have rarely been exhibited outside of Belgium and include the Royal Museum’s most iconic mask, made from wood and celebrating the Luba culture hero.

Pinaree Sanpitak, “Hanging by a Thread”, at LACMA

In the Ahmanson Building, Bangkok-based contemporary artist, Pinaree Sanpitak, has created an installation titled “Hanging By a Thread”. In surprising juxtaposition, eighteen hammocks surround one of LACMA’s most important Southeast Asian sculptures. The textiles used for the hammocks recall the devastating floods of the 2011 monsoon season. The artist intertwines recent and ancient history, culture and religion.

Michael Heizer, “Levitated Mass”, at LACMA

The Museum is hosting six other featured exhibitions along with the ongoing and very popular “Levitated Mass” by Michael Heizer and Chris Burden’s, “Metropolis II”. Add in some gourmet dining at Ray’s or a few cocktails on the plaza and plan to spend the day.
